چکیده

We present a study of a faint fuzzy star cluster system in the nearby SB0 galaxy NGC 5195 interacting with the famous spiral galaxy NGC 5194 (M51), based on HST ACS BV I mosaic images taken by the Hubble Heritage Team. We have found about 50 faint fuzzy star clusters around NGC 5195 which are larger than typical globular clusters with effective radii reff > 7 pc and red with (V − I) > 1.0. They are mostly fainter than MV ≈ −8.3 mag. From the comparison of BV I photometry of these clusters with the simple stellar population models, we find that they are as massive as ≈ 105M⊙ and older than 1 Gyr. Strikingly, most of these clusters are found to be scattered in an elongated region almost perpendicular to the northern spiral arm of NGC 5194, and the center of the region is slightly north of the NGC 5195 center, while normal compact red clusters of NGC 5195 are located around the bright optical body of the host galaxy. This is in contrast against the cases of NGC 1023 and NGC 3384 where spatial distribution of faint fuzzy clusters shows a ring structure around the host galaxy. We suggest that at least some faint fuzzy clusters are experiencing tidal interactions with the companion galaxy NGC 5194 and must be associated with the tidal debris in the western halo of NGC 5195. A Catalog of Bright Star Clusters in the Interacting Galaxy M 51 ∗

We present a catalog of star clusters with VF555W < 23 mag detected in the interacting spiral galaxy M51 system based on the mosaic images taken with HST ACS by the Hubble Heritage Team. We have selected about 3,600 clusters based on their morphological information through the visual inspection. The final star cluster catalog includes 2,224 clusters that are relatively well isolated and have a ...

The possible origin of the faint fuzzy star clusters in NGC 1023

In the lenticular galaxy NGC 1023 a new population of star clusters (" faint fuzzies ") was recently discovered by Larsen & Brodie. These clusters are found inside the disc and are faint (23 ≤ V ≤ 24 mag) and extended with effective radii of r eff ≈ 7 to 15 pc. We present here N-body calculations of a likely formation-scenario through merging star clusters in clusters of star clusters (super-cl...

Faint Fuzzies and the Formation of Lenticular Galaxies

We investigate the dynamical state of a new class of extended star clusters, known as ”Faint Fuzzies”, that were discovered in two nearby S0 galaxies, NGC 1023 and NGC 3384. It is shown that the Faint Fuzzies of NGC 1023 lie in a fast rotating ring-like structure within the galactic disk with mean radius of 5 kpc, rotational velocity of 200 km/s and velocity dispersion of 115 km/s. We propose a...

Globular Cluster Systems in the Hydra I Galaxy Cluster

In this contribution, first results of deep VLT photometry (V,I) in the central region of the Hydra I galaxy cluster are presented. Many star clusters have been identified not only around several earlytype galaxies, but also in the intra-cluster field, as far as 250 kpc from the cluster center. Outside the bulges of the central galaxies NGC 3311 and NGC 3309, the intra-cluster globular cluster ...

Using spectra obtained with the Keck I telescope we have demonstrated conclusively that the faint (23≤V≤ 24 mag.) and unusually extended objects we discovered in HST images of the lenticular galaxies, NGC 1023 and NGC 3384, are star clusters associated with their respective galaxies. In the case of NGC 1023 we were further able to establish that these objects are old (≥7–8 Gyr), moderately meta...
